Electric Boat Expertise Enters Waterford High School Classrooms Through New Industry Partnership
Waterford Public Schools (WPS) proudly announces a new, formalized partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB), establishing WPS as an official EB Partner School District. This collaboration launches the EB Liaison Program, directly connecting students in the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs with industry professionals to enhance learning and develop future employment opportunities. This initiative is a vital investment in the next generation of Waterford's workforce, providing high-value career opportunities that encourage graduates to stay and build their lives in the community.
The partnership is designed to bring Electric Boat's expertise and workforce needs directly into the classroom at Waterford High School, beginning with a focus in the Design area of Advanced Manufacturing.
A Direct Link to Industry
The EB Liaison Program is built on three core functions that will transform the learning experience for students. The initial focus will be supporting the school’s Design curriculum as the school scales to meet other local workforce demands:
- Workforce Mentorship: Electric Boat employees will serve as mentors to students, providing one-on-one guidance and sharing insights on career pathways in the shipbuilding industry.
- Subject Matter Experts: Liaisons will act as subject matter experts for CTE instructors, ensuring the curriculum remains current with real-world practices, including specialized trade knowledge, EB’s proprietary processes, and essential safety regulations.
- Real-World Application: The program is specifically designed to encourage project-based learning and provide authentic, work-based learning experiences.
Program Goals: From Classroom to Career
This partnership is a strategic move to build the local talent pipeline. The key goals include:
- Career Connections: Directly linking the school with EB's staffing resources to host guest speakers, conduct application workshops, and hold career information sessions.
- Hiring Pathway: Encouraging students to formally apply to Electric Boat by highlighting current hiring needs and available positions.
- Work Experience: Actively promoting student participation in EB’s internship and co-op programs, moving students from career awareness into paid, valuable work experience.
The partnership is committed to safety and integrity; all participating EB liaisons adhere to all strict school safety and conduct policies. Liaisons will commit approximately six hours per month to the school, working with students directly working alongside Waterford Public School’s CTE instructors.
