As we begin to prepare for Kindergarten registration in February of 2024, we wanted to make parents/guardians aware of a new Connecticut Law, effective July 1, 2024, that changes the age of enrollment for kindergarten students. Based on Public Act 23-208, beginning with the 2024-2025 school year, all students are required to have reached the age of five on or before September 1, 2024. This law has also been adopted into Board Policy 5015.
For families affected by this new cutoff date, in accordance with the state law, an assessment process has been implemented as the only exception for the September 1 revised date.
For children who will not reach the age of five on or before the first day of September of the school year, the child’s parent or guardian may submit a written request to the principal of the school seeking early admission to the District. Please see below for principal contact information.
Elementary Schools by Street for town streets and the corresponding elementary school can be found on the District website.
Upon receipt of such written request, the principal and an appropriate certified staff member shall assess such child to determine whether admitting the child is developmentally appropriate. For decisions relating to early admission to the District, the decision of the principal and appropriate certified staff shall be final.
Assessments will be scheduled at the elementary schools and will likely coincide with the kindergarten registration window.
Cognizant of the Waterford Public Schools mission to prepare every student to “succeed in an ever-changing world” we will work to ensure success for all of our incoming kindergarten students. We look forward to partnering with our families and welcoming the Class of 2037 in the fall.
Please note that questions regarding Public Act 23-208 and the revised kindergarten enrollment cutoff date can be directed to Mr. Craig Powers, Assistant Superintendent.
