WATERFORDrama, the drama club at Waterford High School, is proud to present the play that inspired the movie, Steel Magnolias. The show will take place October 25th through 27th at 7:00pm in the Waterford High School Auditorium.

Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana around 1988, we follow six local women who all come to the shop to have their hair done. Helped by her awkwardly shy but eager new assistant, Annelle, the wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, an eccentric millionaire, the local social leader, and the prettiest girl in town, who is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby, who is a diabetic, risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength, and love, which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

When asked why or how this show is different or special to her, senior Chloe Wilson, who plays Clairee states, “This show does a really good job dealing with female empowerment. These are really strong women.” Wilson also comments on the time period by saying, “the show brings another era of our history to life. The late 80’s weren’t that long ago, but it’s all new to us in the cast.”

Tickets for Steel Magnolias will be on sale during school hours at Waterford High School starting October 15th.
